One final Hooray

Right now, it’s just a huge hole, in which excavators and trucks are doing their work. Above that, the giant arc rises above San Mamés‘ main stand. The old stadium, in which Athletic Bilbao will be playing until the summer of 2014, when the new arena will be ready. To replace the stadium which was renovated for the 1982 World Cup and has been quietly aging ever since. The stadium which will be demolished after it served the club for 101 years. In a highly modern city, the old ground is an anachronism, a charming one, however. And with „El Loco“ Marcelo Bielsa, old San Mamés gets one final hooray.

Das letzte Hurra

Noch ist es ein riesiges Loch, in dem sich Bagger und Lastwägen tummeln. Darüber thront noch der große Bogen über der Haupttribüne des San Mamés. Des alten Stadions, in dem Athletic Bilbao noch bis Sommer 2014 spielt, ehe die neue Arena bezugsfertig ist. Um jenes Bauwerk abzulösen, das für die WM 1982 komplett renoviert wurde und seither vor sich hin altert; das nach dann 101 Jahren seine Schuldigkeit endgültig getan hat und abgerissen wird. In der modernisierten Stadt ist der alte Ground ein charmanter Anachronismus. Und mit „El Loco“ Marcelo Bielsa erlebt das San Mamés sein letztes Hurra.
